NFL 14-706 / UA11N - CuAl11Ni5Fe5 Nickel Aluminium Bronze

The French AFNOR aerospace nickel aluminium bronze, made in the UK

A French AFNOR aerospace specification for the highly alloyed nickel aluminium bronze CuAl11Ni5Fe5. More heavily alloyed than NFL 14-705, so it carries higher mechanical properties and enhanced wear and anti-galling behaviour.

What is NFL 14-706 / UA11N?

NFL 14-706, also designated UA11N, is a French AFNOR aerospace specification for nickel aluminium bronze CuAl11Ni5Fe5. It is one of the highest strength aluminium bronzes, with typical 800 N/mm² tensile strength, 570 N/mm² proof strength and 215 HB hardness, and it can be heat treated by quench hardening and tempering. It also meets NFA 51-116, DIN 17665 and 17672 WN 2.0978 and EN 12163 and 12420 CW308G.

Should you specify NFL 14-706 / UA11N?

Specify NFL 14-706 where an aerospace bushing or bearing has to carry very high loads and resist galling, and where the drawing has come through a French airframe or engine programme. It is the same material family as AMS 4590 and C63020, which is why those specifications are quoted as equivalents.

The trade-off is ductility. Typical elongation is 4 %, far below the 15 to 20 % of a standard wrought nickel aluminium bronze such as CW307G or DEF STAN 02-833. Do not carry this grade into shock-loaded or heavily welded structures on the strength figures alone.

It is heat treatable by quench hardening and tempering, so the delivered condition matters. Confirm the temper and the test location on the drawing before the order goes in.

For general marine and seawater service where 800 N/mm² is not required, the more ductile CW307G, C63200 or DEF STAN 02-833 will be easier to procure, machine and weld.

Best for aerospace bushings, bearings, wear plates and dies needing the highest strength and anti-galling performance available from an aluminium bronze.
